The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has recently announced the promotion of 5,196 of its staff members across the country. This development was disclosed in the commission's daily bulletin issued by Mrs. Adenike Tadese, the Director of Publicity and Voter Education, in Abuja. The promotions were a result of the 2023 promotion examination and evaluation conducted by the commission, demonstrating its commitment to the welfare and development of its staff.

According to Tadese, the breakdown of the promotions includes 55 deputy directors on Grade Level 16 who were promoted to the rank of Director on Grade Level 17, and 54 assistant directors on GL 15 who were promoted to deputy director cadre on GL 16. Additionally, 338 officers on GL 14 were promoted to Assistant directors on GL 15, while the majority of the promotions affected 4,749 officers between GL 7 and 13.

In a related development, the commission has directed four of its directors to proceed on terminal leave. This decision was made in compliance with a circular issued by the Federal Government on July 27, 2023, which mandated all directors with 8 years or more of service to retire from the public sector. Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), stated that two of the directors proceeding on terminal leave served as heads of departments at the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja, while the other two were deployed as Administrative Secretaries in the state offices.

Olumekun also emphasized that Clinical Officers in the medical cadre were exempt from the Federal Government Retirement Policy, as clarified in Circular MH 7205/T31 dated Sept. 7.
