NDDC DISTRIBUTES PALLIATIVES TO FLOOD-PRONE COMMUNITIES IN BAYELSA STATE

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has recently taken significant steps to address the impact of flooding on communities in Bayelsa State.

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has taken steps to alleviate the impact of flooding on communities in Bayelsa State by distributing palliatives across the eight local government areas. This initiative aims to mitigate the effects of the perennial flooding that has affected many communities in the state. Pius Ughakpoteni, the Director of Corporate Affairs at NDDC, made this known in a statement issued in Port Harcourt.

During the handover of the relief materials in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, the Managing Director of NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, emphasized that the distribution was the agency's response to the challenges faced by the people and a way of lessening the impact of flooding. Dr. Ogbuku, represented by Dr. Week Doodei, the NDDC Director of Procurement, and Godknows Alamieyeseigha, the Director of the Bayelsa State Office of the Commission, handed over the palliatives to representatives of various communities to assist them in addressing their problems.

Dr. Ogbuku reaffirmed NDDC's commitment to addressing the challenges confronting the people of the Niger Delta region, expressing empathy for the flood victims in Bayelsa State and assuring them of the Commission's programs designed to benefit the region's residents. The relief materials included food and household items, farm inputs, as well as livelihood items such as canoes, fishing nets, and hooks, among others, to provide support to the flood victims.

He stressed that the NDDC's role extends beyond physical infrastructure, emphasizing the Commission's involvement in social services. Dr. Ogbuku also highlighted the Commission's commitment to monitoring the distribution of the palliatives to ensure they reach the affected areas in all NDDC mandate states.

Furthermore, he urged community leaders to ensure the fair distribution of the items, cautioning against hoarding or diversion. After inspecting the relief materials, the NDDC representatives directed community leaders to ensure that the items were taken to the different local government areas and communities for distribution, emphasizing the importance of reaching the vulnerable people in their areas.
