UK SURGEONS CARRY OUT FIRST WOMB TRANSPLANT FROM LIVING DONOR

In a remarkable medical feat, surgeons in the United Kingdom have achieved the groundbreaking milestone of performing the first-ever womb transplant.

Surgeons in the United Kingdom have successfully performed the first womb transplant, a groundbreaking medical procedure. The recipient, an unidentified 34-year-old woman from England, received the womb from her sister who served as the living donor. This remarkable development was reported by The Guardian on Wednesday.

The transplant procedure, lasting nine hours, was undertaken on the recipient who had a rare condition from birth, resulting in an underdeveloped womb. Her sister, aged 40 and already a mother of two, generously donated her womb to her sibling.

The recipient suffered from Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome, a congenital reproductive disorder that affects a mere one in 5,000 women. This syndrome leads to underdeveloped vaginas and/or the absence of a womb.

Co-lead surgeon Isabel Quiroga, a consultant surgeon at the Oxford Transplant Centre, which is part of Oxford University hospitals, expressed her delight and pride in the successful surgery. She labeled the achievement as a significant milestone.

The recipient, who resides in England and opted for anonymity, underwent the uterus transplant operation in February at the Churchill hospital in Oxford. The procedure, lasting nine hours and 20 minutes, proved successful, enabling her to leave the hospital after ten days.
