OSOGBO NBA APPEALS TO JUSUN TO END MONTH-LONG STRIKE

The Osogbo Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association recently appealed to the striking members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria to end their month-long strike.

The leadership of the Osogbo Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association made an appeal on Thursday to the striking members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria to end their month-long strike. The union began their strike on November 22 after an incident where they were prevented by the police from confronting the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Adepele Ojo, whom they accused of abusing her office and withholding their allowances.

Mr. Yemi Abiona, the Chairman of Osogbo NBA, expressed concern about the toll the strike and the closure of the court were taking on lawyers. He mentioned that many awaiting trial inmates who were supposed to have been released were being held in custodial centers due to the ongoing industrial action.

Abiona emphasized the negative impact of the strike on the lives of lawyers, as their primary workspace is the court premises. He highlighted that the strike has effectively deprived lawyers of their means of livelihood, except for soliciting jobs they can do in their offices or for those who have work in other jurisdictions outside Osun State. He also noted that the majority of lawyers in Osun State are being adversely affected, with many expressing a desire for the strike to be called off.

He urged the members of JUSUN to reconsider their position and create an opportunity for negotiations after resuming work, as the effects of the strike are not only felt by lawyers but also by others, such as those awaiting trial whose cases have been put on hold since the strike began.
