Edo State's Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, expressed his motivation to run for the governorship in 2024, emphasizing the need to bring governance back to the people. During his annual hosting of media practitioners in Benin, he highlighted his intention to partner with the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Edo State Council to establish an affordable housing scheme for its members in the state. Shaibu acknowledged the challenges faced by civil servants, including journalists, as they approach retirement without personal housing, and he aims to address this issue if elected as governor.

Shaibu stressed the importance of returning governance to the people and away from the elite. He emphasized the need for the government to cater to the needs of all citizens, particularly the downtrodden. He expressed his belief that the government should be accessible to everyone and that the rich should contribute more through taxes to support the system, as seen in advanced countries. Shaibu's aspiration for the governorship is rooted in his desire to ensure that the real Edo people feel the impact of governance.

As a member of a party that values the people, Shaibu sees his candidacy as a means to fulfill the collective aspiration of returning governance to the people. He attributed his conviction to a higher authority, stating that his vision will come to fruition not because of him alone but because of the collective efforts of the people.

Looking ahead, Shaibu pledged to prioritize housing for members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and other civil servants in Edo State. He recognized the anxiety and challenges faced by individuals approaching retirement without secure housing and expressed his commitment to addressing this issue. Shaibu emphasized the importance of providing affordable and accessible housing to alleviate the concerns of those nearing retirement, aiming to ensure a more secure future for them.
