RESIGNATIONS AND POLITICAL TURMOIL: COMMISSIONERS' EXODUS IN RIVERS STATE

Amidst a political conflict between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, a significant number of Commissioners in Rivers State have tendered their resignations.

Nine out of the 19 appointed Commissioners in Governor Siminalayi Fubara's cabinet in Rivers State have tendered their resignations. This wave of resignations has swept through the State’s Executive Council amid the political conflict between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

As of Saturday, nine commissioners, who were reportedly aligned with Wike, have left their positions, including high-ranking officials such as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Zacchaeus Adangor (SAN), and Commissioner for Works, Dr. Des George-Kelly. Additionally, Commissioner for Special Duties, Emeka Woke, Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Mrs. Inime Aguma, Commissioner for Finance, Isaac Kamalu, Commissioner for Education, Prof. Chinedu Mmom, Commissioner for Housing, Dr. Gift Worlu, Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Jacobson Nbina, and Commissioner for Environment, Austin Ben-Chioma have all resigned.

However, as of the latest update on Saturday, 10 Commissioners, who were also appointed by Wike but have reportedly shifted their allegiance to Fubara, remain in the cabinet. These individuals include Chris Green, Commissioner for Sports, Mr. Uchechukwu Nwafor, Commissioner for Energy and Natural Resources, Dr. Roseline Uranta, Commissioner for Women Affairs, Prof. Henry Ogiri, Commissioner for Power, Engr. Charles Amadi, Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Community Development, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Kenneth Chisom Gbali, Commissioner for Youth Development, Joseph Johnson, Commissioner for Information and Communications, Victor Kii, Commissioner for Agriculture, and Isaac Umejuru, Commissioner for Urban Development.

The Commissioners for Housing, Worlu, and Environment, Austen Ben-Chioma, who were appointed alongside the Commissioners for Information (Johnson), Urban Development (Umejuru), and Agriculture (Kii), resigned barely two months after being caught up in the political turmoil in the state.

There are indications that other members of the cabinet are under pressure to resign from their positions. Meanwhile, all the Commissioners from the four Ikwerre-speaking local government areas of the state, including Prof. Mmom (Education) from Ikwerre LGA, Woke (Special Projects) from Emohua LGA, Worlu (Housing) from Obio/Akpor, and Aguma (Social Welfare) from Port-Harcourt City, have already resigned.
