The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office announced on Friday that Matthew Perry, best known for his role as Chandler Bing on the popular TV sitcom "Friends," died from an accidental ketamine overdose. Perry, who passed away at the age of 54, was found unconscious in a swimming pool at his Los Angeles home in October. Despite his reported 19 months of sobriety, he had a long-standing struggle with addiction to drugs, including ketamine, and related health issues.

Ketamine, known for its numbing and hallucinogenic effects, is both used illegally as a recreational drug and by doctors as an anesthetic. Perry had openly discussed his reliance on ketamine during his battles with addiction, describing its ability to ease his pain and help with depression in his memoirs.

The examiner's report revealed that trace amounts of ketamine were found in Perry's stomach, and prescription medications and loose pills were present at his home. While Perry had been undergoing medical treatment involving ketamine, the most recent known infusion was over a week before his death, indicating that the dose would no longer have been in his system.

The report also highlighted Perry's coronary artery disease and his use of buprenorphine to treat severe pain, which would have made him more vulnerable to the effects of ketamine. The autopsy report did not detect alcohol or traces of other drugs such as cocaine, heroin, or fentanyl in his system.

Following Perry's passing, his "Friends" co-stars, Jennifer Aniston and Matt LeBlanc, expressed their grief and shared heartfelt tributes, emphasizing the profound impact of their time together on the show. Aniston described the "Friends" cast as a chosen family that forever changed their lives, while LeBlanc reflected on the cherished moments they had shared.
