The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported 97 road crashes in Anambra, involving 820 individuals, resulting in 35 fatalities and 270 injuries from January to November. Adeoye Irelewuyi, the Sector Commander of FRSC in Anambra, disclosed these statistics during an end-of-year media parley and award ceremony in Awka.

Irelewuyi highlighted the significant improvement and reduction in road crashes compared to the previous year, attributing this progress to the dissemination of road safety information by the media. He stated, "Looking at our activities from January to November 30, we recorded 97 road crashes involving 820 persons, with 25 being fatal, claiming the lives of 35 individuals and injuring 270."

He further explained, "This marks a notable reduction compared to the 2022 records, where we recorded 132 road crashes involving 1,048 persons, 42 of which were fatal, resulting in 64 deaths and 306 injuries. Additionally, we arrested 1,953 offenders for 2,119 offences and impounded 332 vehicles, indicating an improvement from the 2022 figures, which saw 1,381 offenders arrested for 1,493 offences and 382 vehicles impounded."

The Sector Commander announced the commencement of Operation Zero Tolerance to Road Traffic Crash from December 15 to January 15, 2024, aimed at ensuring smooth traffic flow during the Yuletide season. He revealed that 1,000 personnel, including regular and special marshals, would be deployed across the state to oversee robust traffic management, enforcement, and control.

Irelewuyi emphasized that the operation would be conducted in collaboration with sister agencies, the media, the Federal Ministry of Works, the Anambra State Ministry of Transport, and Traffic Management Agency. He also mentioned discussions with the Federal Ministry of Works regarding potential emergency repairs to critical sections of the expressway along the Onitsha-Owerri road, bridgehead, and other areas.

Furthermore, he noted the acquisition of a new 70-ton tow truck (Juggernaut) from the national headquarters to facilitate prompt response and removal of obstructions, ultimately reducing gridlock. These measures are part of the strategies to ensure safe travel within Anambra during the festive season. Irelewuyi urged motorists to prioritize safe driving to reach their destinations safely and to remember that only the living celebrate.
