SENATE COMMITTEE PROBES REVENUE UNDER-REMITTANCE AND DEBT OWED BY NIGERIAN AGENCIES

The Senate Public Account Committee, led by Senator Ahmed Wadada, has launched an investigation into the alleged under-remittance of N62 billion in revenue by the Nigerian Customs Service

The Senate Public Account Committee has initiated an inquiry into the alleged under-remittance of N62 billion in revenue by the Nigerian Customs Service, as revealed in the 2017 Auditor General Report. The committee, chaired by Senator Ahmed Wadada, is seeking explanations from the Customs Service within two weeks regarding this discrepancy. The committee emphasized that its aim is not to unfairly target anyone, but to address and rectify any irregularities for the betterment of the system and the country as a whole.

In addition to the Customs Service investigation, the Senate has directed the Nigerian Port Authority to appear before it to address an $852 million debt owed by operators. Senator Wadada stressed that the committee's intention is not to cast blame, but to use the Auditor-General's report as a means to identify and correct any wrongdoings, ultimately aiming for progress and improvement.

The committee expressed disappointment that the management team of the Nigerian Ports Authority did not appear before them as requested, sending a General Manager instead. The committee has given the Nigerian Ports Authority 48 hours to appear and address queries raised by the Auditor General for the Federation, including issues related to outstanding debts owed by terminal operators and other financial matters.
