Siavash Sobhani, a well-respected doctor and long-time resident of North Virginia, has recently faced a troubling ordeal. At the age of 61, he received a letter from the US State Department after applying for a new passport. The letter stated that due to his father's diplomatic status at the Iranian Embassy at the time of his birth, he should not have been granted US citizenship. This came as a shock to Sobhani, who has practiced medicine in the US for over thirty years and has had his citizenship verified by the State Department multiple times when renewing his passport.
Now 62, Sobhani had been considering retirement and planning to travel the world with his spouse. However, he is now required to apply for lawful permanent residence and adhere to the State Department's guidelines. This unexpected turn of events has already resulted in significant legal expenses, totaling over USD 40,000, and the resolution date of his case remains uncertain.
Expressing his concerns to The Washington Post, Sobhani questioned the potential timeline for his case, fearing that it could significantly delay his ability to travel or even see his gravely ill father-in-law in Lebanon. He has reached out to his senator and congressional representative for assistance, and Congressman Gerald Edward Connolly has corresponded with US Citizenship and Immigration Services on his behalf.
Sobhani's future is uncertain, as he has spoken out against the Iranian regime and fears for his safety if he were to live there. Additionally, he is unsure if he will be able to obtain a passport in time to attend his son's wedding in Portugal the following year. These challenges have left the esteemed physician in a state of uncertainty and concern for the future.
