AKWA IBOM STATE LAUNCHES 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE WITH STERN WARNING AND WALK AGAINST GV

At the launch of the 16 Days Activism Against Gender-Based Violence in Uyo, the Chairperson of the State Gender Based Violence Management Committee, the wife of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, issued a stern warning against gender violence in the state.

During the launch of the 16 Days Activism Against Gender-Based Violence in Uyo, Pastor Patience Umo Eno, the Chairperson of the State Gender Based Violence (GBV) Management Committee and the wife of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, issued a stern warning to rapists, paedophiles, and all perpetrators of gender violence in the state. She emphasized the committee's commitment to eradicating all forms of gender violence and highlighted the alarming rate of rape and abuse in society. Pastor Patience Umo Eno stressed that those who engage in such acts will face the full force of the law, leaving no room for ignorance as a defense.

 

As the Chairperson of the Committee, she officially flagged off the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence in the state, declaring that it would no longer be "business as usual." She called upon men to support the advocacy by rejecting rape and all forms of abuse against women and girls, urging a collective effort to end this menace. Additionally, she encouraged parents not to succumb to pressure but to demand justice, assuring that the state government, through the GBV management committee, has implemented measures to combat this distressing trend.

 

Emem Etteh, a lawyer and the Secretary to the Committee, affirmed that Akwa Ibom has consistently been at the forefront of the fight against rape perpetrators and is unwavering in its commitment to being a leading voice against GBV. Notable figures such as the State Deputy Governor, Sen Akon Eyakenyi, former Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Felicia Bassey, and the Wife of the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Inemesit Uwah, joined the campaign, along with young girls, traditional and religious leaders, women's groups, and civil society organizations. The walk against gender violence commenced at the Waterfront, Nwainba Road, and proceeded to the University of Uyo Main Campus, symbolizing a united front against gender-based violence.
