UNN DISMISSES ALLEGATIONS OF ADMISSION RACKETEERING AND HIGHLIGHTS ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS

The Nigerian Senate recently held a public hearing on the 2023 Cybercrime (Prohibition and Prevention) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023, at the Senate Complex in Abuja.

The University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) has refuted recent allegations of admission racketeering, asserting that the claims lack substantial evidence. The issue was brought to the attention of the Nigerian Senate during a plenary session by Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi of Ebonyi North Senatorial district. In response, the Vice Chancellor of UNN, Prof Charles Igwe, addressed the media during the 51st convocation ceremony of the institution, dismissing the allegations and attributing them to the intense competition for admission into professional courses, which sometimes leads to unfounded accusations.

Prof Charles Igwe emphasized that the allegations were baseless and contradicted the transparency principles upheld by the University of Nigeria. He reiterated that the university has consistently conducted its admissions transparently, adhering strictly to the Federal Government's prescribed criteria of 45% merit, 35% catchment, and 20% Educationally Less Developed States (ELDS).

Despite the controversy, the Vice Chancellor announced that a significant number of the university's 2022/2023 graduates, totaling 288, achieved first-class degrees and will be honored at the 51st convocation. The convocation, scheduled for Friday, will include a lecture by the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), Architect Sonny S. T. Echono, focusing on "University Autonomy and the Challenge of Sustainable Education Funding in Nigeria."

Furthermore, Prof Charles Igwe revealed that out of the 12,962 graduating students, 11,444 will receive first degrees, with an additional 67 receiving diplomas, and 1,451 obtaining postgraduate degrees for the academic session. He provided a detailed breakdown of the Bachelor's degrees, including 4,853 for 2nd class (upper division), 5,077 for 2nd class (lower division), 653 for the Third class, with seven graduates receiving a pass, and 616 unclassified degrees, typically awarded to graduates of courses such as medicine, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine.

Additionally, a total of 67 diplomas will be awarded at the convocation, comprising 7 distinctions, 35 credits, 22 merits, and 3 passes.
