ASUU NSUK Calls for Prompt Payment of Earned Academic Allowances Amidst Threats of Industrial Action

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Nasarawa State University Keffi (NSUK) is calling for the prompt disbursement of over N600,000,000 in Earned Academic Allowances owed to lecturers by the Nasarawa State Government.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Nasarawa State University Keffi (NSUK) has urged the Nasarawa State Government to promptly disburse over N600,000,000 in Earned Academic Allowances owed to lecturers. This call comes amidst concerns over a potential breakdown of industrial harmony. Professor Samuel Alu, Chairman of ASUU NSUK, made this appeal during a peaceful protest held in Keffi, Nasarawa State on Wednesday.

The protest temporarily disrupted academic and official activities at NSUK as lecturers gathered in significant numbers. They convened at the university's assembly hall and later marched to the main gate, holding placards with messages such as "Save the Ivory Towers from Total Collapse," "Education is a Right That Must Be Protected," and "Revitalization is Key to the Survival of Nigerian Universities."

Professor Samuel Alu, addressing journalists, emphasized that public universities nationwide continue to face challenges such as infrastructure deficits and inadequate staffing, which require urgent attention. He called upon both the federal and state governments to fulfill their commitments, including releasing funds for university revitalization and addressing the issue of the Earned Academic Allowance. He also raised concerns about the proliferation of universities across the country.

Furthermore, Professor Alu urged Governor Abdullahi Sule to follow the lead of states like Kwara, Ekiti, and Osun in implementing the federal government's N35,000 wage award to university lecturers. This, he argued, would alleviate some of the financial pressures faced by university staff in light of recent fuel subsidy removal.

The union warned that if the state government fails to meet their demands within the stipulated time frame, they will embark on an indefinite industrial action.
