ASUU Urges Nigerians to Resist FG's Plan to Use Pension Funds for Developmental Programmes, Threatens Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Niger Delta University has called on Nigerians to oppose the Federal Government's plan to divert pension funds for other purposes, amidst ongoing disputes over university funding, salaries, and infrastructure development.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Niger Delta University, Amassoma in Bayelsa State, has urged Nigerians to resist the Federal Government's plan to use pension funds for developmental programmes. ASUU chairman, Lucky Bebeteidoh, stated that the FG is only allowed by law to access 5% of the funds, but they want to use the entire pension fund.

The union also staged a protest to demand the implementation of several memoranda signed with ASUU on funding for the revitalization of public universities. Bebeteidoh highlighted various contentious issues, including the illegal dissolution of governing councils, withheld salaries, and the implementation of UTAS in place of IPPIS.

ASUU blamed the government for the woes of Kebbi varsity and expressed displeasure over the lack of attention to the developmental needs of Niger Delta University by Governor Douye Diri. The union demanded increased funding, staff accommodation, faculty buildings, laboratories, and hostels for students. They also urged the state government to approve the 35/25% wage award and increase subvention to the university.

The union resolved to increase media and public engagement on the government's failure to renegotiate the 2009 agreement and begin the process of going on strike. Bebeteidoh criticized those who negotiated past agreements on behalf of the FG, saying they have become stumbling blocks to the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement.
