Solar micro inverter are evolving as an alternative approach for converting direct current (DC) power generated from solar photovoltaic (PV) panels into usable alternating current (AC) power. Unlike traditional string or central solar inverter that are installed to convert power from an entire solar array, micro inverter are installed at the individual panel level. Each micro inverter is connected directly to one solar panel, allowing it to maximize that panel's individual output through module-level maximum power point tracking (MPPT).

How Solar Micro Inverter Work
Each micro inverter contains its own DC-AC conversion electronics and connects directly to the back of an individual solar panel using two small DC wires. When solar energy hits the panel and generates DC power, the Solar Micro Inverter uses MPPT algorithms to track and latch onto the panel's peak power point as the sunlight intensity changes throughout the day. It then converts the variable DC voltage from the panel into a fixed AC voltage that is synchronized to the utility grid frequency. The AC power from all the individual micro inverter in an array is summed together and fed directly into the building's electrical wiring system.

Benefits of Module Level Power Electronics
A key advantage of micro inverter is their ability to independently maximize the power output of each solar panel through module-level MPPT. This is because factors like shading, dirt, or module mismatch within a large array can cause some panels to generate less power than others at a given time. With a central or string inverter, lower performing panels will drag down the output of the entire array since all panels must operate at the same voltage level. But micro inverter allow each panel to operate at its unique maximum power point regardless of other panels in the system.
