NIGERIA'S GOVERNMENT PLANS TO ESTABLISH SPECIAL POLICE FORCE TO COMBAT ILLEGAL MINING

The Nigerian government, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, has unveiled plans to establish a specialized police force to tackle the issue of illegal mining in the country.

The government led by President Bola Tinubu has announced its intention to establish a special police force to combat illegal mining in Nigeria. The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, revealed this plan during an interview on NTA's Weekend File program. The aim is to increase the contribution of mining to the country's economy.

In response to questions about challenges in the mining sector, Alake stated that the issue of insecurity would be addressed through collaboration with various security agencies and the creation of a dedicated police force. He explained that intelligence reports have indicated a link between illegal miners and the rise of banditry in Nigeria. The President fully supports the establishment of this special police force, which will be known as the Mining Police Force or the Mine Police.

The minister emphasized that the proposed security outfit would not be limited to the mining sector alone. Its operations would also cover the marine and blue economy. The Ministry of Solid Minerals would have control over the special police force, and its personnel would be accountable to the ministry.

Furthermore, Alake mentioned that the ministry has given illegal artisanal miners a 60-day grace period to organize themselves and become compliant with regulations. This includes ensuring they pay royalties and taxes to the government.

Regarding the process for obtaining a mining license, the minister stated that the ministry plans to streamline and simplify the application and licensing procedures. They aim to create a one-stop shop where potential investors can easily understand the requirements and steps involved. The ministry is committed to issuing licenses within 30 days of completing a legitimate application.

Alake emphasized the importance of the licensing process in attracting investors and promoting a favorable business environment for mining in Nigeria.
