MOTHER DEMANDS RELEASE OF SON'S CORPSE FOLLOWING ALLEGED POLICE KILLING DURING PROTEST IN PORT HARCOURT

In the aftermath of a protest in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, the mother of a 27-year-old man named Onyekachi Ugiri is demanding the release of her son's body.

The mother of a 27-year-old man, Onyekachi Ugiri, who was allegedly killed by the police during a protest in Port Harcourt, has demanded the release of her son's corpse. The protest had erupted in response to the move by the Rivers State House of Assembly to impeach the state governor.

During the protest, demonstrators took to the major streets of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area and attempted to enter the Government House Port Harcourt in solidarity with the governor. The situation escalated when some youths attacked the home of the Speaker of the State Assembly, leading to clashes with the police.

According to reports, the police personnel opened fire on the protesters in the Old Government Reserved Area (Old-GRA) after the attack on the Speaker's residence. It was later revealed that four people were shot, and 122 individuals, including the State Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, were arrested by the police. The arrested individuals were subsequently arraigned in court but granted bail.

Mrs. Callister Ugiri, the mother of the deceased, stated that her son's friend, who participated in the protest, informed her that her son was killed by the police. She explained that her son had left home on Tuesday to join the protest but did not return until news of his death reached her on Wednesday. According to Mrs. Ugiri, her son was shot in the head.

Expressing her grief, Mrs. Ugiri pleaded with the police to provide her son's corpse and called on the governor for assistance. However, at the time of reporting, the Rivers State Police Command could not confirm the incident.
