Former lawmaker, Shehu Sani, has called on President Bola Tinubu to avoid using electricity supply as a weapon against Niger Republic amid the leadership crisis in the West African country. Sani expressed concern that Nigeria might become an instrument of French neo-colonialism within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) sub-region.

In a tweet on Sunday, the social critic emphasized that Nigeria should not assume the role of an imperialist vigilante in West Africa. Instead, he urged the President to seize the moment and work towards achieving a new, independent West Africa.

Sani suggested that President Tinubu should exercise caution not to become a mere apprentice of French neo-colonialism in the subregion. He further proposed that this moment presents an opportunity for West Africa to strive for independence by eliminating the existing individual currencies such as the CFA, Cedi, and Naira, and adopting a common West African Currency.
