Governor Alia of Benue State Seek Repeal of the Open Grazing and Ranches Establishment Law

There are reports that instead of enhancing law enforcement efforts, the governor has proposed a Bill to repeal the Open Grazing and Ranches Establishment Law (2017) before the Benue State House of Assembly.

Concerns have been raised regarding the recent incidents in Makurdi, the capital city of Benue State, where suspected herdsmen have been able to carry out attacks without hindrance, indicating a lack of safety throughout the state under the governance of Governor Hyacinth Alia.

The party is troubled by reports that instead of enhancing law enforcement efforts, the governor has proposed a Bill to repeal the Open Grazing and Ranches Establishment Law (2017) before the Benue State House of Assembly.

This raises questions about the motives behind repealing the law and whose interests it would serve. The party urges Governor Alia to fulfil his obligations and address the pastoralists' unlawful activities.

The state government previously issued a 14-day ultimatum for open grazers and armed herders to leave the state, following which full enforcement of the anti-open grazing law began on March 6, 2024.
