Recently it was reported that ECOWAS directed the closure of land and air borders between member states against Niger Republic due to a military coup that removed democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum from office. The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), representing Northern Nigeria, has warned President Bola Tinubu and ECOWAS against military intervention in Niger Republic.

ECOWAS, chaired by Nigeria, issued a seven-day ultimatum to the military in Niger to restore the ousted President. If not met, all necessary measures to restore constitutional order, including the use of force, will be taken. Additionally, ECOWAS ordered the freezing of all Niger State and state enterprises' funds in commercial banks across member states.

Nigeria's Defence Headquarters stated that military action is the last option to reverse the situation in Niger. They have not yet received such orders, but the military chiefs in the West African sub-region submitted their plans to ECOWAS for consideration.

ACF responded to the situation, warning that military intervention in Niger could have consequences for Nigeria and the ECOWAS sub-region. They emphasized the importance of dialogue to resolve the issue and expressed concerns about potential repercussions of military force.

ACF supports the position to restore democratic rule in Niger but calls on ECOWAS to prioritize dialogue and diplomacy in resolving the current impasse for peaceful coexistence with Niger and stability in the ECOWAS region.
