Heavy security presence was observed on Saturday at Gidan Sarki Nasarawa, the residence of the dethroned Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, as confirmed by Sunday PUNCH. The security personnel, including policemen, soldiers, and officials of the Department of State Services (DSS), were deployed amid the ongoing power struggle within the Kano Emirate.

Notably, soldiers were also sighted at the residence of the current Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, and other strategic locations in Kano, signaling efforts to bolster security in light of the emirate's power dynamics.

The recent upheaval stems from a new law repealing the creation of four emirates by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje. Governor Abba Yusuf subsequently reinstated Sanusi as the Emir of Kano, reverting the state to a single emirate structure.

Sanusi's reinstatement has reignited tensions, with the deposed Emir Bayero also returning to Kano. Amidst the uncertainty, Governor Yusuf ordered the immediate arrest of Bayero for allegedly disrupting public peace, further escalating the situation.

While the reasons for the heightened security remain unofficial, sources suggest it was a precautionary measure to prevent clashes between supporters of the rival emirs. Despite the tension, Kano residents continued with their daily activities, reflecting resilience amidst the turmoil.

Governor Yusuf and Emir Sanusi held closed-door meetings with top security chiefs, indicating efforts to manage the crisis. However, the situation remains fluid, with political and legal ramifications unfolding.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar condemned the federal government's deployment of soldiers in Kano, viewing it as a breach of peace and constitutional norms. He urged restraint and adherence to legal processes to resolve the dispute.

Meanwhile, the New Nigeria People's Party accused supporters of former Governor Ganduje of instigating chaos in Kano. The political maneuvering and counter-accusations underscore the complex dynamics at play in the Kano Emirate crisis.

Amidst the uncertainty, stakeholders, including the Nigerian Bar Association and the forum of Islamic clergy in Kano, appealed for calm and urged peaceful resolution of the dispute. Their calls for dialogue and respect for the rule of law highlight the importance of stability in Kano and beyond.
