FEDERAL GOVERNMENT REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO ADDRESS HUMANITARIAN CHALLENGES IN BENUE STATE

The Federal government has reiterated its commitment to collaborating with the Benue State government in addressing the humanitarian challenges faced by the state.

The Federal government has reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the Benue State government in addressing the humanitarian challenges faced by the state. Mr. Tijani Ahmed, the Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), made this assurance during the distribution of relief materials to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at the Ichwa IDPs camp in Makurdi.

 

Mr. Ahmed stated that the Federal Government is determined to restore peace and security in Benue and other parts of the country, with the ultimate goal of enabling the IDPs to return to their ancestral homes. He emphasized the Commission's efforts to strengthen collaboration with the State Government to address the humanitarian challenges and provide durable solutions.

 

Acknowledging the hardships faced by the IDPs, Mr. Ahmed assured them of the Commission's commitment to providing relief materials in the short term, as well as working towards livelihood restoration, housing, education for children, and healthcare for all. He expressed the Commission's dedication to providing sustainable interventions and pledged to return with further support.

 

Dr. James Iorpuu, the Executive Secretary of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA), revealed that the Ichwa camp currently houses 14,229 people from 2,403 households. Mr. Aondowase Kunde, the Commissioner for Humanitarian and Disaster Management, highlighted that the state has 21 IDP camps accommodating over two million people who were displaced from their homes by armed herdsmen.

 

Mr. Paul Biam, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, expressed gratitude on behalf of Governor Hyacinth Alia for the support provided by the delegation and the Federal Government in addressing insecurity and assisting victims of insurgency in the state.

 

During the distribution, the IDPs received various items, including sewing machines, mattresses, food items, and other household materials.
