Former Abia State First Lady Resigns from PDP Amidst Political Shifts

Former First Lady of Abia State, Mrs. Odochi Orji (Osinulo), has made headlines by resigning from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the main opposition party in Nigeria.

Former First Lady of Abia State, Mrs. Odochi Orji (Osinulo), has tendered her resignation from the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Her resignation letter, dated May 21, 2024, was addressed to the Chairman of PDP in her Umuahia Urban Ward 1. This decision comes shortly after her son, the immediate-past Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji, also announced his departure from the PDP.

Senator Theodore Orji, Mrs. Orji's husband, served as the Governor of Abia State from 2007 to 2015. In her resignation letter, Mrs. Orji cited personal reasons for leaving the PDP. While she did not disclose her next political affiliation, speculation suggests that she may join her son's new party.

The resignation letter, obtained in Umuahia, expressed gratitude for the support received during her tenure as the First Lady of Abia State and as a loyal supporter of the PDP. Mrs. Orji thanked the party members and wished them well in their future endeavors.

Copies of the resignation letter were forwarded to the Abia State Chairman of PDP and the Acting National Chairman of the party. It remains uncertain whether Senator Theodore Orji, who served most of his gubernatorial and senatorial terms under the PDP, will also leave the party.

While Senator Orji's aide, former Chief Liaison Officer Hon. Ifeanyi Umere, confirmed Mrs. Orji's resignation, no further details were provided. The recent wave of resignations from the PDP in the South East, following the departure of former Governor of Imo State, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, has stirred speculation about the political landscape in the region.
