Family Seeks Justice: Delay in Legal Action Following Tragic Death of Rebekah Sekidika

The tragic death of Rebekah Sekidika, a promising first-class graduate, has left her family in anguish as they seek justice for her untimely passing.

Three months after the tragic death of Rebekah Sekidika, a first-class graduate of Benson Idahosa University, Benin, Edo State, while undergoing a medical procedure at 'Paragon Clinics and Images' in Port Harcourt, her family expresses frustration over the delay in taking legal action. Rebekah, a 24-year-old Microbiology graduate, was preparing for her Masters in the United Kingdom before the incident occurred.

Sampson Sekidika, Rebekah's father, alleges that her death resulted from medical negligence and incompetence during the procedure, emphasizing that she did not require surgery. Speaking to PUNCH Metro in Port Harcourt, Mr. Sekidika, who works at the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas, expressed sadness over the delay in charging the matter to court, where he hopes to attain justice.

Despite the release of the autopsy and toxicology reports three weeks ago, no progress has been made in the legal proceedings. Mr. Sekidika highlights the frustration in waiting for justice to be served, emphasizing the need for prompt action from the authorities.

While acknowledging the efforts of the Rivers State Commissioner of Health in forming a panel of inquiry to investigate the matter, Mr. Sekidika emphasizes the urgency of charging the case to court. He stresses the importance of holding medical practitioners accountable and ensuring such incidents do not recur.

Mr. Sekidika emphasizes that justice, while unable to bring back his daughter, will provide closure to the case and serve as a deterrent to medical negligence. He calls for swift action from the authorities to expedite the legal process and address the systemic issues that contributed to Rebekah's untimely death.

The family has endured immense mental trauma since Rebekah's passing, grappling with the loss of a healthy young woman who was taken unexpectedly. Mr. Sekidika acknowledges the difficulty of healing from such a loss but expresses faith in God to guide them through this trying time.
