Speaker of Cross River State House of Assembly Responds to Impeachment Attempt

In the midst of political turmoil within the Cross River State House of Assembly, Speaker Elvert Ayambem responded to his impeachment by over 20 members of the assembly.

Following his impeachment by over 20 members who had earlier signed a notice of impeachment against him, Ayambem made a statement. This came after a motion for his removal was initiated on the floor of the House by Effiong Ekarika, the member representing Calabar South 1, and seconded by Charles Omang.

In response, the speaker declared the process null and void, as stated by his Chief Press Secretary, Matthew Okache, on Wednesday. Allegations were made that Akarika, who moved the motion of impeachment, disrupted the session by allowing hoodlums to enter the chamber.

The statement clarified, "The Cross River State House of Assembly has been alerted to false news reports that the Speaker, Elvert Ayambem, has been impeached. To be clear, the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly is, without a doubt, Elvert Ayambem."

It further denounced the disruption during the plenary session, describing it as a "ridiculous charade with no constitutional basis." The House emphasized its lack of awareness of any impeachment notices being served prior to the disruptive incident and urged the public to disregard rumors of impeachment and crisis.

Despite the upheaval, Ayambem expressed his indifference towards the impeachment and reiterated his commitment to uplifting the assembly and supporting Governor Bassey Otu's administration.

Before this, officials from the Department of State Services, the Dragon Squad, and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force had taken control of the assembly complex to mitigate tensions among the lawmakers.
