Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria to Resume Strike in Shipping Sector over Unresolved Demands

Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has announced its decision to resume the suspended strike in the shipping sector of the country's economy, starting from October 30.

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has announced that its members will resume the suspended strike in the shipping sector of the country's economy starting from October 30. The decision was made due to the unwillingness of the shipping companies' representatives to negotiate a minimum standard condition of service for the sector. The President-General of MWUN, Mr. Adewale Adeyanju, stated that despite the intervention of the former Minister of Transportation, Muazu Sambo, which led to the suspension of the strike initially scheduled for June 5, the negotiations failed to resolve the issue.

Adeyanju highlighted that a technical committee comprising the union and shipping employers was established by the minister to address the union's demands. However, after three meetings, it became evident that the representatives of the shipping employers lacked the mandate to make decisions, leading to a lackadaisical attitude and the collapse of the negotiation process. Consequently, the shipping branch of MWUN will resume the suspended indefinite action across the nation's port formations after the expiration of the renewed seven-day ultimatum.

In a show of solidarity, the other three branches of the union, namely the Nigerian Ports Authority, dockworkers, and seafarers, will join their colleagues in the strike action. The MWUN's decision to resume the strike reflects their dissatisfaction with the lack of progress in negotiating a minimum standard condition of service for the shipping sector.
