NLC and TUC Warn Government Over Minimum Wage and Electricity Tariff Hike

Leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have issued a stern warning to the government regarding two critical issues: the recent hike in electricity tariffs and the conclusion of negotiations on the minimum wage.

The leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have issued a warning to civil society allies regarding their planned industrial action if the government does not address key concerns by May 31. In a joint communique released today, the leaders of both labour centers emphasized the urgency of their demands.

They specifically called on the federal government and the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to reverse the recent hike in electricity tariffs by the end of the month. Additionally, they reiterated their ultimatum for the government to conclude negotiations on the new minimum wage by May 31, threatening a national strike if their demands are not met.

This statement underscores the resolve of the NLC and TUC to hold the government accountable for addressing pressing issues affecting workers' rights and livelihoods. It sets a clear deadline for action and signals the potential for significant labor unrest if the government fails to act accordingly.
