Former US President Donald Trump is set to appear before a magistrate judge in a Washington, D.C. courthouse as a criminal defendant facing four felony charges. The court location has a direct view of the violence that occurred at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.

The charges against Trump are related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. They include conspiring to defraud the United States and obstructing an official proceeding, a charge that has already been successfully brought against rioters who breached the Capitol.

Prosecutors are also using a Reconstruction-era civil rights law to allege that Trump conspired to deprive individuals of their voting rights. The indictment claims that Trump and six unindicted co-conspirators orchestrated a plot to overturn the election results leading up to and on January 6, exploiting the chaos and violence of that day to further their efforts.

One of the allegations is that Trump and his co-conspirators deceived individuals from seven targeted states into creating and submitting certificates asserting they were legitimate electors.

The judge overseeing the case, Beryl Howell, has been impacted by the situation and recently stepped down from her role as the DC district court's chief judge.

Trump has criticized the ongoing special counsel investigation and charges, dismissing them as politically motivated, especially since he is the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican Party.
