Portable: Nigerian Artiste Detained Over Alleged Unpaid G-Wagon Debt

Habeeb Okikiola, a Nigerian music artiste better known as Portable, spent the night in a police cell after failing to meet the bail conditions set for his release.

Habeeb Okikiola, a Nigerian music artiste better known as Portable, spent the night in a police cell after failing to meet the bail conditions set for his release. He was arrested for allegedly refusing to pay a N14 million debt incurred from purchasing a G-Wagon from a car dealer in Lagos State. A source confirmed the situation on Wednesday.

According to the source, Portable was unable to fulfill the bail conditions set for his release on Tuesday, resulting in his continued detention. The artist reportedly paid N13 million for the G-Wagon, which was priced at N27 million, but refused to settle the remaining balance. The car dealer requested the return of the vehicle, but Portable allegedly declined, citing issues with the car's condition.

Confirming Portable's overnight stay in police custody, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the musician remained detained due to the absence of a reliable surety.

Videos circulating online depict the moments when police officers attempted to arrest Portable. In one video, Portable attempted to evade arrest but was pursued and eventually apprehended by the officers. In another video, he resisted arrest as four policemen struggled to detain him and transport him into a vehicle.

These videos have sparked various reactions, with some condemning Portable for resisting arrest and others criticizing him for not paying the N14 million balance owed for the vehicle. Despite repeated attempts to collect the outstanding amount, the car dealer claimed Portable refused to pay, alleging that the vehicle was faulty.

PUNCH Online had previously reported on Portable's purchase of the N27 million vehicle, where he only paid N13 million and neglected to settle the remaining balance. The car dealer subsequently involved the police in the matter.
