ASUU Issues Ultimatum to Tinubu-Led Government: Pressing Concerns and Calls for Action

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government led by President Bola Tinubu, setting a two-week ultimatum to address critical issues plaguing public universities.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a two-week ultimatum to the Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government, warning of potential industrial crises if pressing issues in public universities remain unaddressed. Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, ASUU's National President, expressed disappointment at the government's lack of effort in resolving these challenges following a meeting of the National Executive Council at the Obafemi Awolowo University.

ASUU outlined several grievances against the Tinubu administration, including the failure to renegotiate the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, the dissolution of governing councils in federal universities, issues with the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), and the rejection of the new curriculum for universities.

Furthermore, ASUU criticized the proliferation of universities by both federal and state governments, emphasized the importance of adequate funding for universities, and raised concerns about creeping fascism in some Nigerian universities, citing unjust sackings of members.

The union also highlighted the non-release of arrears of earned allowances and owed salaries, urging the government to address these issues promptly. Finally, ASUU expressed concern about the socio-economic crisis in Nigeria and called on the government to provide solutions to improve the lives of ordinary citizens and restore confidence in the country.
