Workers Protest Band A Tariff Hike Across Electricity Distribution Companies

In response to the recent Band A tariff hike, workers represented by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have initiated protests at various electricity distribution company (DisCo) offices across Nigeria.

Workers, organized under the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have launched protests at various offices of electricity distribution companies (DisCos) in response to the Band A tariff hike. On Monday, these workers gathered at DisCos' offices across the country, preventing normal work operations from commencing for the day.

In Lagos, protesters congregated at the corporate headquarters of the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company, chanting slogans and demanding the reversal of the Band A tariff increase. Similarly, in Oyo State, demonstrators stormed the office of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, engaging in picketing activities.

Reports indicate the presence of police personnel at these locations to prevent potential disruptions of public order during the protests. The NLC and TUC had earlier issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to revoke the revised tariff.

Despite these protests, the Federal Government has cautioned against reverting the tariff hike, arguing that such action could have detrimental effects on the power sector. Citizens are urged to endure temporary challenges resulting from the tariff adjustment.

Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has advised the Nigerian government to eliminate electricity subsidies in other tariff bands as a measure to safeguard the economy. This recommendation comes amidst ongoing discussions surrounding energy pricing policies and their broader economic implications.
