SENATOR EZEA HIGHLIGHTS ROAD CONDITION AS CAUSE OF FOOD INSECURITY IN SOUTHERN NIGERIA

In a recent Town Hall Meeting organized by Hon. Chidi Obetta, the member representing Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency, Senator Okey Ezea highlighted the deplorable state of the Otukpo-Obollo Afor-Opi-9th Mile Road as a major cause of food insecurity in Southern Nigeria.

The deplorable state of the Otukpo-Obollo Afor-Opi-9th Mile Road has been identified by Senator Okey Ezea as the cause of food insecurity in Southern Nigeria. During a Town Hall Meeting organized by Hon. Chidi Obetta, the member representing Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency, Senator Ezea highlighted that 80% of the food items consumed in Southern Nigeria come from the North. He further explained that the prices of foodstuffs have significantly increased in the region due to the impassable nature of the road, which serves as the only gateway from the North to the South.

Senator Ezea emphasized that the Federal Government has been made aware of the road's condition through motions moved by lawmakers from the Senatorial District. He expressed concern over the high cost of transporting goods, such as yams, from Benue State to Southern Nigeria due to the bad state of the Otukpo-Obollo Afor-Opi-9th Mile Road. He emphasized the urgent need for intervention to address the current challenges faced by the region.

During the Town Hall Meeting, Hon. Obetta, the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Legislative Budget and Research, addressed his constituents and highlighted the importance of identifying their needs. He announced the opening of two constituency offices in Nsukka and Igbo-Eze South Local Government Areas of Enugu State. Additionally, he appointed 36 Special Assistants to aid in his interactions with constituents across the 36 wards in the Constituency. Hon. Obetta also identified 91 projects in the Constituency and pledged to tackle them head-on.

Hon. Obetta shared his legislative efforts since his inauguration into the 10th House of Representatives, including motions on flooding and erosion issues in Alor-Uno Community. He mentioned his collaboration with colleagues from Enugu North on the rehabilitation of the Otupko-Obollo-Afor-9th Mile Road and the presentation of a Bill to establish a Federal Medical Centre in Obukpa, Nsukka. He emphasized the need for a tertiary health facility in the densely populated constituency.

The Town Hall Meeting was attended by critical stakeholders, including the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Charles Igwe, who was represented by his Deputy, Prof. Pat Okpoko. Other attendees included the Labour Party gubernatorial candidate in Enugu State, Chijioke Edeoga, and members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, as well as church leaders, traditional rulers, and leaders of labor unions in the state.
