PRESS FREEDOM MUST BE PROTECTED IN NIGERIA

Introducing the urgent call for press freedom in Nigeria, Avocats Sans Frontières France, also known as Lawyers without Borders France, expressed deep concern over the continuous acts of intimidation and violence faced by journalists.

The organization expressed regret over the continuing acts of intimidation and violence faced by journalists in Nigeria while carrying out their work. Avocats Sans Frontières France, also known as Lawyers without Borders France, raised concerns about the recent attacks on journalists, stressing that press freedom is vital for democracy and justice as it empowers citizens with essential information to form opinions and challenge authority.

In a statement issued by the Country Director, Angela Uwandu Uzoma-Iwuchukwu, ASF France in Nigeria called on government agencies, particularly Nigerian security forces, to show greater respect for media workers. They emphasized that governments are accountable to the people, and the media plays a crucial role as watchdogs in ensuring this accountability for the benefit of society. Any compromise, intimidation, or oppression of the media in their service is unacceptable.

The statement cited specific incidents of journalists facing arrest and detention, highlighting the need to protect their rights and prevent a chilling effect that could deter journalists from carrying out their duties without fear or favor. The Country Director, Angela Uzoma-Iwuchukwu, addressed members of the media at ASF France Nigeria HQ, stressing the importance of an independent and unbiased media that presents the true picture of Nigeria's democracy and society.

The statement also pointed out that there have been efforts to suppress media and civic space in Nigeria, with the country ranking 129th out of 180 countries on the Global Press Freedom Index. It highlighted the urgent need for a paradigm shift to ensure the protection of journalists and press freedom. All stakeholders, including state and non-state actors and institutions, were called upon to work collaboratively to improve press freedom rights in Nigeria.
