The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has announced the division of its structure into nine zonal chapters, with three for Nigeria and six for the Diaspora. This move is part of an ongoing restructuring process led by Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, aimed at promoting transparency and accountable leadership within the organization. The statement, signed by Ohanaeze spokesman Dr. Alex Ogbonnia, explained that the de-zoning of the organization is intended to ensure effective representation and coordination.

Under the new structure, the 19 states and Abuja will have their headquarters in Abuja, while the South West will have its headquarters in Lagos, and the South East will have its headquarters in Enugu. The statement also outlined the establishment of Ohanaeze Diaspora chapters, with headquarters in various locations around the world, including London, Washington, DC, Brazil, China, South Africa, and Australia.

In addition to the structural changes, Ohanaeze Ndigbo plans to build an International Market in Igboland, with the aim of creating job opportunities, enhancing trade, and boosting the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The organization also intends to hold a Summit of Igbo Traders Associations in Nigeria and parts of Africa to further promote economic growth and development.

The statement further announced the rescheduling of the Ohanaeze Northern Convention to November 23 and 24, 2023. The President General of Ohanaeze called for the harmonization of the various factions within the organization to ensure a united and peaceful executive. The organization expressed satisfaction with Imo State Governor Sen. Hope Uzodimma's offer of amnesty to "unknown gunmen" hiding in the bush and urged other Igbo governors to follow suit and embrace the amnesty program.

During the meeting, the President General also announced the establishment of a Special Committee for Reconciliation and Peace Building in Nigeria, chaired by Dr. Dominic Okechukwu, with Dr. Joseph Ibekwe serving as Secretary. Additionally, the Elders Council for Abuja and the Northern States of Nigeria was inaugurated, with Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife as Chairman, Chief SN Okeke as Deputy Chairman, and Prof. Charles Nwekeaku as Secretary. These initiatives aim to foster unity, reconciliation, and peace within the Igbo community and Nigeria as a whole.
