Condemned Herdsman Seeks Legal Aid: Plea for Appeal in Nimbo Massacre Case

Mohamed Zurai, a member of the herdsmen killer-squad convicted for his role in the Nimbo massacre in Enugu State, has appealed for legal aid to challenge his death sentence.

Mohamed Zurai, a condemned member of the herdsmen killer-squad responsible for the massacre of over 40 individuals in Nimbo, Uzo-Uwani local government area of Enugu State on April 25, 2016, has appealed for legal assistance to challenge the death sentence imposed on him by Justice Anthony Onovo of the Nsukka Division of Enugu State High Court on May 17, 2023.

In an undercover investigation conducted by our correspondent at the Enugu Correctional Centre, where Zurai awaits execution, he expressed remorse for his involvement in the violent act but claimed that there were many others involved in carrying out the operation. He requested the assistance of a lawyer to appeal his judgment.

Zurai was among the five suspects arrested by the state on May 9, 2017, in connection with the mass murder in Nimbo. Charged with murder under section 274 (1) of the criminal code cap 30 vol II of the revised laws of Enugu State of Nigeria 2004, Zurai was identified as the prime suspect whose cell phone contained footage of the Nimbo killings.

In his verdict on May 17, 2023, Justice Onovo convicted Zurai as the only participant in the Nimbo massacre. However, Zurai confided in our reporter, alleging that the attack was in retaliation for the killing of an Alhaji with his head severed by the Enugu community. He claimed that while he filmed the killings, he did not physically harm anyone and questioned why only he was convicted while others involved in the operation were acquitted.

Zurai further revealed fears for his safety, claiming that his sponsors sought to eliminate him while in custody. He alleged that individuals were offered N300,000 to kill him in detention to prevent him from revealing details of the incident. Despite denying direct involvement in the killings, Zurai pleaded for legal representation to contest his death sentence and requested contact information from our reporter for future communication.
