NDLEA FCT COMMAND SEIZES DRUGS WORTH N80 MILLION, ARRESTS 134 SUSPECTS IN ANTI-DRUG TRAFFICKING OPERATION

FCT command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has achieved a significant milestone in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse. In a recent operation, the command seized a total of 3,988.74 kilograms of assorted drugs, valued at approximately N80 million.

The Federal Capital Territory command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made a significant seizure of assorted drugs, weighing a total of 3,988.74 kilograms, with an estimated value of N80 million. Commander of Narcotics, Kabir Tsakuwa, revealed this information in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja. Alongside the drug seizure, the command also arrested 134 individuals suspected of drug trafficking, peddling, and abuse during the same period.

The seized drugs include cannabis Sativa, cocaine, methamphetamine, tramadol, rohypnol, and diazepam. Commander Tsakuwa highlighted that the most prominent drug seized by NDLEA operatives was cannabis Sativa, with a total weight of 3,861.789 kilograms. Additionally, small quantities of cocaine, diazepam, tramadol, methamphetamine, and pentazocine were also confiscated.

Out of the 134 suspects arrested, 128 were male and six were female. The NDLEA successfully prosecuted 104 of these suspects, resulting in 27 convictions. The total street value of the seized drugs during this period amounted to approximately N80 million.

Commander Tsakuwa explained that the NDLEA's approach to reducing drug usage and trafficking in the FCT involves a balanced strategy of drug demand reduction and drug supply reduction. The demand reduction aspect focuses on preventive measures, while the supply reduction aspect involves enforcement duties.

Under the preventive strategy, the NDLEA conducts intensive sensitization and public enlightenment programs through the "War Against Drug Abuse" (WADA) campaign. This campaign aims to engage all Nigerians in the fight against illicit substances. Sensitization programs are organized in schools, corporate organizations, religious institutions, and other relevant stakeholders. The NDLEA collaborates with various NGOs and stakeholders to carry out these sensitization efforts.

In terms of supply reduction, the NDLEA focuses on arresting drug offenders, conducting investigations, and prosecuting them. This enforcement approach is crucial in curbing the supply of illicit drugs.

Furthermore, the NDLEA provides support systems for individuals dependent on drugs through counseling at their rehabilitation center. The duration of counseling varies from three to twelve months, depending on the level of addiction.

Overall, the NDLEA in the FCT is committed to combating drug abuse and trafficking through a comprehensive approach that combines prevention, enforcement, and rehabilitation efforts.
