Federal Government Initiates Emergency Fuel Supply Amid Persistent Scarcity

As fuel scarcity persists across various regions in Nigeria, the Federal Government has taken urgent measures to address the issue by initiating a 15-day emergency fuel supply plan.

As fuel scarcity persists in various regions, the Federal Government has initiated a 15-day emergency fuel supply to ensure adequate distribution of the commodity nationwide. This measure aims to alleviate the challenges faced by consumers due to the shortage. Vessels importing Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) will continue to dock at the shore, discharging petrol to various depots for distribution to filling stations.

The Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria reported that its members in Apapa and other locations in Lagos received 300 million litres of fuel from eight vessels this week. Additionally, the South-West Regional Coordinator of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Ayo Cardoso, confirmed the offloading of 240 million litres at various depots on Monday, with an additional 85 million litres as of Tuesday evening.

Despite these efforts, queues at filling stations across Ogun, Lagos, and other areas remain unabated, with many motorists facing challenges in accessing fuel. Some individuals have resorted to parking their vehicles until petrol becomes available. Furthermore, the few stations with fuel supply are selling at exorbitant prices, adding to the plight of consumers.

In response to concerns, Cardoso assured the public of imminent relief, stating that more vessels are scheduled to arrive in Nigeria over the next two weeks. Each state will receive its allocated share of fuel to mitigate queues at filling stations.

Meanwhile, the fuel scarcity has severely impacted daily activities in Ogun State, leading to increased transport fares and reduced mobility. Many residents have resorted to trekking due to the unavailability of fuel and inflated transport costs. Students have also been affected, with reports of decreased attendance in schools due to transportation challenges.

Motorists continue to endure long queues at filling stations, with only a few dispensing fuel at inflated prices. Black market activities have surged, with petrol being sold at significantly higher rates by unauthorized vendors. Despite ongoing efforts, the fuel scarcity persists nationwide, prompting calls for swift government intervention to address the crisis.
