TUC President Calls for Reversal of High Electricity Tariffs in Nigeria

Festus Osifo, President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), delivered a poignant address during the 2024 Workers' Day event in Abuja, Nigeria.

Festus Osifo, the President of the Trade Union Congress, emphasized the unethical nature of high electricity tariffs in Nigeria during remarks made on Wednesday. Addressing attendees at the 2024 Workers' Day event in Abuja, Osifo called upon the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to revert the increased electricity tariffs within one week. He voiced discontent with the inconsistent power supply across the country, which adversely impacts Nigeria's economic development.

Osifo underscored the critical importance of efficient energy management for national progress, stating that any nation unable to effectively utilize its energy resources faces inevitable decline. He highlighted the central role of power in stimulating economic growth and underscored the significance of oil and gas in achieving energy stability.

Despite the privatization of the power sector over a decade ago, Osifo lamented the unchanged predicament of Nigeria's power sector. He attributed this stagnation to the continued involvement of former owners in the purchasing process, foreseeing ongoing challenges for Nigerian consumers.

Osifo condemned the practice of imposing higher tariffs on Nigerians despite inconsistent power supply, labeling estimated billing as extortion and daylight robbery. His remarks drew attention to the recent approval by NERC to increase electricity tariffs for customers categorized under Band A. Musliu Oseni, the Vice Chairman of NERC, disclosed that this adjustment would result in customers paying N225 per kilowatt-hour, a significant increase from the current rate of N66.
