SENATOR IFEANYI UBAH'S CONSCIENCE AND POLITICAL ALLEGIANCES: A CLOSER LOOK

Senator Ifeanyi Ubah's recent move to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his remarks about conscience during his introduction to the party's national leadership have sparked discussions and raised questions.

During the grand introduction of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah to the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja, he sought to address the conscience of Ndigbo. Ubah, a former footballer turned businessman and politician, commended the efforts of President Buhari's administration and claimed that it would be difficult for anyone with a conscience not to join the APC. As a result, Ubah, who was previously the national leader of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), made the decision to leave the YPP and join the APC.

Ubah's conscience was pricked by what he perceived as the president rewarding even those who did not vote for him. He cited the appointment of Engineer David Umahi as the Minister of Works as an example. He noted that in contrast to the previous era, where the Igbo were not given prominent commanding positions in the military services, an Igbo man has now been appointed as the Chief of Naval Staff.

However, the example of Umahi's appointment may draw cynical commentary from political pundits who question the motives behind it. Umahi, a former chairman of the Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), defected to the APC midway through his second term as governor. His defection was seen by some as self-serving and lacking any ideological motivation.

Despite Umahi's defection and his unsuccessful bid for the APC's presidential ticket, his appointment as Minister of Works is being celebrated as a basis for praising President Tinubu. However, it is difficult to discern what Tinubu has done for the Southeast beyond this appointment. The Southeast region appears to be neglected by the central authorities, and the lopsided appointments by the Tinubu government have not been acknowledged by Senator Ubah.

While the Buhari government concentrated military appointments in the North, the Tinubu government has predominantly appointed individuals from the Southwest in the financial sector. This lopsidedness has been criticized by conscientious individuals from the Southwest, but Senator Ubah seems to overlook it.

Furthermore, Senator Ubah appears to be blind to the administration's ineptitude in managing the economy and the resulting hardships faced by the people. The removal of fuel subsidy has led to high transport costs, leaving many unable to afford transportation.

In conclusion, if Senator Ubah has no qualms about abandoning those who looked up to him as the national leader of the YPP to join the APC, he has no grounds to redefine what conscience means to others.
