Renowned economist, Prof. Pat Utomi, has warned that Nigeria is at risk of collapsing if the current state of affairs is not properly managed. Speaking at a gathering of the new tribe of Patriots for the Nigerian Restoration in Abuja, Utomi highlighted the weakening of institutions and the collapse of shared values as major contributors to the crisis. He expressed concern over the lack of trust in institutions like the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and emphasized the importance of strong institutions and values in societal progress.

Utomi acknowledged the widespread national crisis, including insecurity and poverty, affecting all segments of society. He attributed the current state of affairs to factors such as the erosion of meritocracy, corruption-driven centralization, and the rise of money politics. He stressed the need for action in the face of this national horror show, urging professionals and citizens to work towards a new order and the end of corrupt practices.

Drawing on the concept of Ubuntu, Utomi called for the building of a new tribe of Nehemiahs, patriots who embody their professed values and work for the betterment of future generations. He emphasized the importance of building institutions and shared values that would distinguish Nigerians honorably and counter the unsustainable paths driven by greed and the resource curse.

Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, former Minister of Education, echoed Utomi's sentiments, emphasizing the need for a dispassionate evaluation of Nigeria's current state. She highlighted the disappointment felt by the younger generation, who have witnessed repeated failures from previous leaders. Ezekwesili stressed the importance of strong institutions and the need to define values based on integrity rather than material wealth. She called for character, competence, and capacity to be the basis for leadership recruitment.

Former Minister of Finance, Mrs. Nanedi Usman, added that while bad leadership is often discussed, the role of followers should not be overlooked. She emphasized the need to educate the public about the purpose of public office and the importance of holding leaders accountable. Usman called for a value reorientation at all levels and urged society to question individuals who flaunt wealth without visible means of livelihood.

In conclusion, the speakers at the gathering emphasized the urgent need for a change in Nigeria's trajectory. They called for the rebuilding of institutions, the promotion of shared values, and the recruitment of leaders based on character and competence. It is hoped that these efforts will help steer the nation towards a more prosperous and sustainable future.
