Kapital was founded in the 1980s by Toshikiyo Hirata, a karate instructor with a deep admiration for American denim. After traveling to the United States to study vintage denim production and culture, Hirata returned to Japan and launched the brand in Kojima, Okayama—a region often referred to as the "denim capital" of Japan. The name "Kapital" itself pays homage to Kojima’s legacy, a clever nod that fuses place and purpose.
