What is Vehicle-to-Grid Technology?

Vehicle to grid (V2G) technology allows electric vehicles to connect to and power the electricity grid. When an electric vehicle is parked it can be used as a distributed energy storage device for the electric grid by running the vehicle’s batteries in reverse. Instead of drawing electricity from the grid to charge, an enabled EV would provide electricity back to the grid during peak demand times. The car's battery acts as a resource for the electric grid and helps balance the electricity supply and demand.

How Does V2G Work?

For a vehicle to participate in a Vehicle To Grid Technology it needs to have a bidirectional charger installed. This allows electricity to flow both into and out of the vehicle's battery. When electricity demand is low, V2G enabled vehicles can charge up just like normal EVs using less expensive off-peak electricity. When demand rises, typically during daytime hours, the grid operator sends a signal to participating vehicles to start powering the grid.

The EV owner is compensated financially for exporting their stored battery power back to the grid. Utilities can draw small amounts of power from many EVs connected to the grid to shave peak demand without deeply discharging any one vehicle's battery.
