Insights from Esports Expert Leo
During a recent conversation, we had the pleasure of speaking with Daniel “Leo” Cubangay, a prominent figure in the world of esports, particularly known for his work with MPL Philippines and as a technical coach for the Auster Force team.
This past weekend provided a brief intermission for MPL – PH, allowing us to delve into Leo's experiences, his insights on mobile esports, and his evolving role within the competitive scene.
'
To kick things off, could you introduce yourself to those who might not be familiar?
'
Certainly! I’m Daniel Cubangay, commonly referred to as Leo. My journey in esports has seen me take on various roles, including broadcaster and analyst, primarily within the MPL Philippines. Recently, I've taken on the role of technical coach for Auster Force, a team actively competing in the league. Additionally, I lead talent development at Kovenry, an agency focused on nurturing esports talent.
'
How did your journey in MPL and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) begin?
'
My introduction to MLBB dates back to late 2016. I was truly impressed by how a complex MOBA could be adapted for mobile devices. By 2018, I started streaming MLBB on Twitch, and in early 2019, I became part of MPL PH during its third season.
'
Having witnessed the evolution of MLBB over the years, what aspects of the game stand out to you, and what fuels your enthusiasm during broadcasts?
'
Throughout my time in MLBB, both as a player and commentator, I’ve seen firsthand the incredible growth and transformation of the game. One aspect I cherish is the continuous updates from Moonton that introduce fresh content and encourage innovative strategies. My excitement during broadcasts stems from a deep understanding of the game’s history and the competitive landscape. Playing extensively has also enhanced my appreciation for the dedication and skill of the players, as they execute remarkable plays at the highest levels.
'
As a newcomer to MLBB, I've developed a fondness for the character Saber. Do you have a favorite hero, and what draws you to them?
'
I have a few favorite heroes when it comes to gameplay.
At the top of my list is Uranus. His sustainability is remarkable, and the impact he has on the game isn't apparent until you dive in and realize how frustrating it is for opponents to face an unyielding tank.
Another hero I admire is Popol and Kupa. The intricacies of the coding that enables the dog companion to function effectively are truly fascinating. Playing this hero primarily as a tank, and seeing how he integrates within the game's overall dynamics, leads to such enjoyable experiences both in gameplay and spectating.
Now, regarding my new position in the MPL, could you elaborate on the role of a technical coach? What does your job entail?
As a technical coach, my primary focus is analyzing game data and understanding how it correlates with our team's playing style. This aspect is ever-evolving. While I can engage in extensive number analysis and theoretical discussions, my role ultimately shifts to evaluating the players' in-game behaviors and aiding in enhancing their performance. I collaborate closely with Coach Lift to ensure we're well-prepared and equipped for competitions.
Let’s shift our attention to the MPL scene. I’ll do my best to refrain from revealing too many insights about Work Auster's strategies. Having participated in only two series in MPL – PH so far, what do you perceive as the strengths and weaknesses of Work Auster?
Work Auster Force undoubtedly showcases exceptional mechanical skills. Each player excels in their respective roles and demonstrates a natural affinity for the heroes they use; some might say they were destined to play Mobile Legends. Their high game IQ means I seldom need to second-guess their thought processes, and that level of trust is a significant asset.
However, one area for improvement could be their relative lack of experience. On average, Work Auster is among the youngest teams in MPL PH, both in terms of age and professional background.
Looking ahead to Week 3 of MPL – PH Season 7, we are set to witness the much-anticipated clash between "Tzy" as Work Auster faces off against Bren. How significant will this rivalry be in the context of the game? The matchup between Karltzy and Flaptzy against Rtzy and 3martzy presents a complex rivalry. While their names might suggest a straightforward competition, it appears that Flaptzy and 3martzy will be the primary focus in the exp lane.
Another exciting battle to watch will be between Chuuu and Karltzy in the jungle, a clash that fans are eagerly anticipating. Bren has shown resilience, bouncing back from a difficult start to the season. Their determination is palpable, and they seem more prepared than ever.
On the other hand, Work Auster Force has certainly evolved since their early days in the M2 and open qualifiers.
When it comes to your collaboration with Work Auster Force, it’s clear that their gameplay and dedication resonate with you. But what else draws you to this team?
I must confess, my experience in coaching and analysis for a professional team is limited. When Work Auster Force approached me, I felt a mix of anxiety, gratitude, and hesitation. However, knowing Daniel “Chuuu” Chu and his journey over the past two seasons, I recognized the team’s resilience. It was encouraging to hear that the players had expressed interest in having me on board, which indicated a willingness to collaborate and respect my input. Their youthful energy and inherent talent also facilitate the coaching process, and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working with them.
Looking ahead, which opponents do you predict will pose the biggest threat to Work Auster Force? Given Blacklist International's current dominance, do you foresee them as a significant challenge in week 4?
Without a doubt, Blacklist International presents a formidable hurdle for all teams in the MPL PH. Additionally, Onic Philippines stands out as a strong contender. Their roster and style resonate with what Work Auster Force could become after gaining more experience in the league.
Balancing the roles of a caster and a team member can be challenging, especially when striving to maintain impartiality. Do you find that your perspective as a caster allows you to identify potential issues more readily while observing the games?
Game Day Anxiety and Mobile Esports
Game day tends to bring a wave of stress for me.
I often find myself feeling restless and unable to maintain my composure while observing the match from behind the scenes.
This anxiety could potentially impact my broadcasting performance, though it hasn’t happened thus far.
I sincerely hope it remains that way.
Fortunately, our production team has taken steps to ensure that my schedule aligns with my team's games, allowing me to avoid any conflicts.
I am grateful for their understanding and adjustments in light of my circumstances.
When it comes to mobile esports and gaming, how do you view its evolution compared to established titles like Dota 2 or League of Legends?
Do you think mobile esports has reached a similar level, or is it still on the path of development?
In my perspective, mobile esports is still in its early stages, akin to the younger sibling of more seasoned games such as League of Legends and Dota 2.
These titles have had a significant head start of almost five years.
That said, there’s ample opportunity for growth ahead.
Across the globe, brands are coming to appreciate the power and importance of mobile esports, which should help elevate our games.
Moreover, with the rapid advancements in smartphone technology, devices are becoming increasingly sophisticated each year.
The argument of “it’s just a mobile game” is gradually losing its credibility.
I genuinely believe we are on the path to expanding our reach and potentially sharing the spotlight with the major titles.
I think that covers everything from my side, but do you have any final thoughts to share?
Nothing else from me at the moment.
Thank you for the opportunity to discuss this!
I value the chance for our insights as broadcasters and coaches to be highlighted.
We’ll conclude our conversation here.
Thank you for your time, Leo.
Mark your calendars to catch Leo and the Work Auster Force team in action starting April 9th, as MPL – PH Season 7 resumes post-break.
With such a skilled technical coach at the helm, we anticipate some remarkable performances from Work Auster.
However, only time will reveal the outcomes as the season unfolds.
Stay tuned for updates on Week 3 of MPL – PH Season 7 later this week, as we’ll provide more details on team stats, news, and general information regarding MLBB.
