Heat Exchangers: An Efficient Way to Transfer Heat Between Two Fluids

An air cooled heat exchanger uses air as the cooling medium to remove heat from plant utilities and liquid process streams. Finned tubes or barstock exchanger configurations are used to maximize surface area for heat dissipation to ambient air. These exchangers are widely used for cooling

Types of Heat Exchangers

There are several different types of heat interchanger that are used in various industrial processes depending on the application. Some of the major types are:

Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers

The shell and tube Heat Exchangers is one of the most common type of heat interchanger used in many industries. It consists of a series of tubes which one fluid passes through. The shell side contains a second fluid which flows over the tubes thereby facilitating heat transfer between the two fluids. This type is often used for processes requiring large heat transfer areas or pressures and temperatures on either side. They can withstand high pressures and offer flexibility in cleaning and maintenance.

Plate Heat Exchanger

Plate heat interchanger consist of series of thin corrugated plates positioned closely together with ports for the two fluids. The fluids flow into alternating channels formed by the corrugated plates thereby transferring heat from one fluid to the other through the thin metallic plates. They take up less space and offer larger surface area for heat transfer compared to conventional heat interchanger. Plate heat interchanger are commonly used in applications requiring compact design and limited space.

Tube Bundle Heat Exchanger

Tube bundle heat interchanger have a central collection header or drum with multiple straight tubes attached to it. One fluid flows inside the tubes while the other flows over the outside surface of the tubes. They are compact, inexpensive and easy to fabricate but have lower heat transfer efficiencies compared to shell and tube heat interchanger. Tube bundle heat interchanger find applications in heating systems and heat recovery units.
