WALE ADENUGA: A LIFETIME OF CONTRIBUTIONS TO NIGERIAN ENTERTAINMENT

His notable productions include the popular "Ikebe Super" in the 1970s, "Binta and Friends," "Papa Ajasco," "Super Story," and "Akpan and Oduma." Reflecting on his career, Wale Adenuga highlighted his lifelong dedication to comedy, citing his initiation of "Ikebe Super," Nigeria's highest-selling cartoon magazine in 1976, and the launch of the long-running Nigerian TV series, "Papa Ajasco," in 1997 on AIT.

 

Following the successful maiden edition of the comedy award, Wale Adenuga emphasized the importance of the award in motivating comedians to strive for excellence and compete with their peers. He expressed the belief that the award would bring out the best in comedians and contribute to the overall growth of the comedy industry. When asked about his own recognition within the Nigerian comedy circuit, Wale Adenuga pointed to the national honor, MFR, bestowed upon him in acknowledgment of his contributions to the development of comedy in the country. He expressed contentment with the recognition and felt blessed for his achievements in the industry.

 

At 75, Wale Adenuga expressed his desire to be remembered as someone who significantly contributed to the advancement of the comedy business in Nigeria. He also shared the story of how he met his wife, revealing that they were course mates studying Business Administration at the University of Lagos. He attributed his popularity on campus to his role as the Chief Cartoonist for the university's magazine.

 

Wale Adenuga recounted his early exposure to drawing cartoons, stating that he started cartooning at a young age without any formal education in the craft. He described cartooning as something innate to him, noting that he was always drawing from a very early age. Despite his passion for cartoons, he maintained a high level of academic performance throughout his secondary and university education. Wale Adenuga emphasized that he never learned cartooning from anywhere and expressed gratitude for being able to achieve success with his innate talent. He also mentioned creating all the cartoon characters and drawing the magazine cartoons for the first three years of "Ikebe Super."
