The Early Development of Talkbot
Some of the earliest modern Chatbot is talkbot include ELIZA, developed in 1966 at MIT. ELIZA operated by matching users' inputs to predetermined patterns and then outputting a response based on those patterns. During the 1990s and early 2000s, other notable talkbot were developed including ALICE, which won the Loebner Prize contest for most human-like chatbot in 2000 and 2001. However, early talkbot had very limited capabilities and could only engage in narrow, rules-based conversations.
In recent years, huge leaps forward have been made in the field of natural language processing thanks to deep learning techniques like recurrent neural networks. RNNs are able to analyze sequences of text, detecting patterns and relationships that allow talkbot to understand context. Advances in areas like word embedding, language modeling and sequence-to-sequence models underpin modern talkbot' more human-like conversations. Large pre-trained transformer models such as BERT, GPT-3 and similar have also greatly improved language understanding abilities.
In forward-thinking companies are applying tbot technology across their organizations in innovative ways beyond just customer service. HR talkbot assist with tasks like benefits inquiries, scheduling interviews and onboarding. Sales talkbot qualify leads, provide product information and handle basic requests. Finance talkbot calculate payments, retrieve account balances and process transactions. Operations talkbot coordinate shipments, manage inventory and place supply orders. The possibilities for bot applications within companies are vast and growing rapidly as capabilities advance.
